Coupon clippers have taken over the checkout lines in record numbers, with record savings. But if you still think most coupon clippers have blue hair, think again! Mobile and internet coupons are gaining popularity across all ages and all incomes, and are especially popular with consumers in their 20s and 30s.

So just how much do coupons influence your customers? Check out the latest stats on coupon usage trends below.

Why are more people using coupons?

Rising food and gas prices have changed people’s spending habits. That’s led shoppers to look for more ways to save like increasing use of coupons, and planning and combining their shopping trips.

Who uses coupons?

  • 53% of shoppers redeeming a digital coupon are buying a product for the first time
  • Moms are roughly twice as likely to search for coupons online as other types of women
  • Teens aged 13-17 are also using coupons for items most important to them, such as clothing (25%), entertainment (19%) and beauty and grooming care (18%).
  • The grocery category continues to be the biggest usage of coupons, with 92% of those surveyed indicating they are using coupons for those every day needs. Additionally, 45% are using coupons for dining out, 38% for clothing; and 35% for cosmetics and beauty products.

What does this mean for your business?

Coupons play an important role in the customer experience. Coupons usually aren’t money-makers themselves - they’re a way to get people in the door. In fact, the coupon company Groupon warns the businesses that use its website that they will probably lose money in the short-term on the deals. So make sure the product or service is a winner, even if your customers are getting it for cheap. After all, you want them to eventually return and pay full price, don’t you?

Great deals don’t necessarily lead to devotion to a brand or business, but they can if they generate a positive experience. The key is thinking of the coupon as more than just a bar code that pops up on an iPhone, or a tiny square in the local newspaper. Instead, put yourself in your customers’ shoes, and think about the experience that the coupon creates for them.

Let Musango do what we can to promote your business with coupons and drive more traffic through your door!
